This album is inspired by Tracey, Phoebe and Sara who tell me regularly to stop being silly….
“Clever” is an interesting adjective…it can be used with noble intent to describe something truly smart and wondrous. Clever Words are also used in the real world to deceive, distort, promote fear, perpetuate ignorance, create propaganda, start wars, help you believe, persuade you to buy things and generally make you angry. This is the message I hope you find in this song.
Men Without Shoes “When spiritual values of a primitive society are exposed to modern civilisation, it’s people lose meaning in their lives, their social organisation disintegrates and they themselves morally decay” – C.G. Jung
No Fences – This song is inspired by many trips to the Kimberley, where there is plenty of space and not many fences.
Everytime I Feel The Wind Blow – I happened to be playing football in Darwin in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy hit. This is my story.
Two Old Ladies Dancing – I met these two lovely ladies at a gig in Ariah Park in the Riverina and virtually wrote the song driving home that night.
Campfire – There is nothing better than sitting round an open fire chewing the fat.
Midnight In Paradise – I drove across the Nullabor many times when I was playing football in Perth. The Nullabor is a magic place at night…
The Little Things – The birth of my two daughters inspired this song.
Full Moon Tonight (P. Knight/G. Luhrs) – My good friend Peter Knight and I wrote this song about the wartime experiences of Pete’s Dad as a bomber navigator. The family only discovered details of his time in England when they found his diary after his death. In it he talked about his profound fear of flying those missions, particularly when there was moonlight, as this made the bombers much more visible to the enemy fighter planes.
Camp Quality – Camp Quality has proven to be an inspirational place for those kids battling cancer. This is the story of one young feller I met when performing at one of those camps.
I Don’t Want To Be Me Tonight – Some observations I made one beautiful Spring night when I happened upon some of Sydney’s homeless.
A Widow’s Son – Ned Kelly’s Jerilderie letter was his side of the story.
Where Did We Go Wrong? A little ditty inspired by Firesign Theatre’s Seventies piece “Everything You Know Is Wrong!”This scenario has actually played out for some people I know!
The Keeper Of The Night – A gentle lullaby to finish off – again inspired by my daughters.
